I study how meaning is expressed in natural human languages. I like to think, in particular, about the smallest pieces of the expression of meaning, how they are realized within a language and across languages, and how they compose. I study the formal syntactic, morphological, and semantic properties of expressions, as well as how they are understood by ordinary speakers. My collaborative work probes the relationship between language and (other aspects of) mind. You’ll often find me musing about the meanings of comparative and superlative sentences with more, -er, -est, most, etc.
